MIL (Media and Information Literacy) Week Event in Aberdeen

A small, but select, group of people gathered together on Halloween in The Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen to hear two presentations.  They were joined by a larger group of virtual attendees from the UK and beyond.

Jacqueline Geekie, Public Libraries Representative on CILIP Information Literacy Group (ILG) shared the new definition of Information Literacy and was followed by Dina Martzoukou of RGU, Dr Crystal Fulton of University College Dublin, Ireland and Dr Petros Kostagiolas of the Ionian University, Greece who presented the initial findings on their joint research on Digital Competencies for Digital citizenship.  The project involves a multi-level analysis of university students’ digital competencies from the perspective of students’ everyday life experiences as digital citizens, by means of a survey which is currently live via this link: https://robertgordonuniversity.onlinesurveys.ac.uk/digital-competencies-for-digital-citizenship-survey 

The research aims to bring together academics and librarians with the purpose of developing a common digital competencies agenda which could be incorporated into entry level university programmes.  The researchers would therefore like to encourage academics and librarians from different institutions to forward this survey to their students and use it as a basis for further critical reflection and discussion.

The two presentations complemented each other really well as the new definition has an Information Literacy and everyday context and it was really interesting to hear how students rate their digital competencies.

LILAC conference 2019 in Nottingham - Last call for presentations

Hi everyone,

This is a reminder that the call for presentations for LILAC 2019 will close on 14th November.

LILAC welcomes proposals which address information literacy from all sectors and contexts. In 2019 we invite you to present on any aspect of information literacy, there are no specific themes. We ask that your presentation makes explicit reference to your innovative practice or research in information literacy.

LILAC is committed to encouraging diversity at the conference and we would specifically like to encourage proposals from members of the BAME community and other under-represented communities and sectors.

 Deadline for proposals:

Call for presentations opens: 8 October 2018

  • Call for presentations deadline: 14 November 2018 (17:00 GMT)
  • Notification of acceptance of abstracts: 21 December 2018
  • Full presentation submission deadline: 3 April 2019

To submit a paper you will need to register an account via https://www.lilacconference.com/register - if you already have an account then you just need to login and go to ‘my account’ where you’ll see details of how to submit your abstract.

 All proposals are blind refereed by our panel of reviewers.

LILAC 2019 will be taking place from 24th-26th April 2019 in Nottingham and will be hosted by the University of Nottingham.

An Investigation into Scottish Teenagers’ Information Literacy and Search Skills

This research paper which was the result of a CILIP ILG bursary granted to David Brazier and Morgan Harvey Northumbria University, was presented at ISIC: The Information Behaviour Conference, 9 -11 October 2018 http://www.isic2018.com/programme/isic-2018-programme.html by David Brazier, Morgan Harvey and Geoff Walton.

Introduction. This paper presents the results of a study investigating the information literacy and search skills of young people in Scotland. Method. Participants (n=57) completed two out of four different search tasks for which the correct answers (i.e. relevant documents) were known. Their interactions with the search system were logged and information about their own perceptions of the task were collected through pre- and post-task questionnaires. Analysis. The log data from the search system was analysed using the R statistical software package to understand the performance and behaviour of the participants when conducting the search tasks. 

Results. While we identified some evidence that information literacy and search skills were being employed, overall performance was low with participants often unable to produce successful queries and/or unable to identify relevant documents, even when some were present in the results. 

Conclusions. Search performance and ability to identify relevant information was generally poor, a fact that participants themselves were frequently unable to recognise. The results also suggest a reliance on complex search assistance tools (such as spell checking and query suggestions), which are common features of major search engines, but not of smaller systems, which pupils are also likely to have to use.
