'Radical Information Literacy' themed webinar Tuesday 17 February

I've been meaning to sign up to InformAll information know-how for all and finally got round to it as a result of receiving an email about a free webinar 'Radical Information Literacy'. The webinar sounds interesting so will sign up for that once I have read some of the back ground reading specifically Andrew Whitworth's book of the same name. Andrew is leading the discussion and the theme is based upon his book. The discussion sounds interesting and just the sort of things I and the CoP have been discussing / involved in. it will also fit in nicely with my PhD, I'm currently working on my literature review and it's just the sort of reading and discussion I'm looking for. Details of the webinar are as folows:

InformAll is organising a webinar on the theme of Radical Information Literacy, on Tuesday 17 February 2015, from 16:30 to 18:00 GMT. It is free for all to join. This will be the first in a series on topical subjects of relevance to anyone, in the UK and internationally, interested in information literacy.

.. the discussion, which will be an opportunity to consider the issues covered in his book: the way in which the development of both the theory and practice of information literacy has been affected by its institutionalisation in academic libraries, resulting in a neglect of more critical and relational approaches that seek to promote a redistribution of authority over information practice, rather than confirm existing authorities. The webinar will explore how the theory of Radical Information Literacy could be turned into practice in many different contexts beyond  the 'traditional' confines of the library world: within workplaces, among community groups, campaigning organisations, social networks...

This online event will therefore explore how the ownership of information literacy can be extended so that learners, formally and informally, may develop their own critical approaches to the handling of information and to the evaluation of information sources.

Further details, including background reading and how to register interest in the webinar, are available at http://www.researchinfonet.org/infolit/ridls/informall-webinars/ . We hope that as many readers of this newsletters as possible will be able to join us from across the globe on the day!

Information is not knowledge

I've been reading Zurkowski 1974 paper and discovering lots of interesting things and quotes. I particulalry like this one:

Information is not knowledge; it is concepts or ideas which enter a person's field of perception, are evaluated and assimilated reinforcing or changing the individual's concept of reality and/or ability to act. As beauty is in the eye of the beholder, so information is in the mind of the user. (Zurkowski, 1974, p.4).

Paul Gray member of the Scottish Information Literacy Community of Practice and his 23 (more) librarians blog posting - includes his information literacy training role at the Scottish Government

I thouroughly enjoy reading the 23 Librarian blog posts and now the 23 (more) libraians. if you haven't read any then I would highly recomend them. The last posting is from Paul Gray who currently works as a librarian for the Scottish Government

When he started in the Scottish Government Library he joined the training team at the same time, and says he was "glad of all that user education experience as information literacy has now become very much a central part of my job – delivering our training materials with my training team colleagues". Paul and the team have been doing some interesting working including developing online courses. Along with the Head Librarian he developed a rolling 10 week online self-directed course called 10 Things. it is based on the 23 Things CPD programme.

Paul is an active member of the the Scottish Information Literacy Community of Practice and I've got to know him but discovered all sorts of things from the posting that I didn't know before. Thanks for sharing with us Paul.

"In this Information Age the rise of digital and social media tools has brought with it some amazing innovations and immense challenges. The challenge to achieve information literacy (IL) in this information rich society is vital for lifelong learning and allows us to capitalise on the diverse and often overwhelming range of information choices which we have been confronted with by the power of the Internet. This great power has forced all of us to develop strategies for confronting issues concerning accessibility, reliability, authenticity and validity as well as information overload. Information Literacy is a vital transferable skill for lifelong learning in both formal and informal learning environments throughout people's lifetimes. Information literacy facilitates active citizenship of individuals. Information literacy prepares people for lifelong learning because it enables them to find the information they need for any task or decision at hand. In helping to provide and expand access to information, helping to facilitate full participation in Society- our role is crucial. We must prepare for a Society full of Information, prepare for Digital Citizenship for a Digital Age."
